Spring 2014 hasn’t been spoiling us with a lot of sunshine and thermometer rarely goes over 10-13C. To make up for this, here is a list of event for the rest of this rainy May.
Wednesday- Sunday, May 14 – 18
Shopping centers, boutiques, restaurants, museums and cafes in the downtown Helsinki come together for the Lovely Helsinki City Festival, an annual event to celebrate the beginning of summer season.
Explore special offers downtown shops and malls have during the festival. Stay up late and enjoy shopping until midnight on May 15, the Shopping Night. Take a break in one of the city coffee shops and try their special coffee/tea + dessert offers.
If you are not into shopping, there are still plenty of events for adults and children organised in the center. Visit the centre of Helsinki to enjoy flower city decorations made by tens of florists and vote for the best work.
Have a look at the special events organized in the city museums for the festival and register for one of the workshops offered by the boutiques of the Design Districts. And in the evening relax and enjoy live music on the ESPAN LAVA stage in the Esplanadi park.
Saturday, May 17
This is an event not to be missed! This week Sunday is one of the 4 days a year when anyone can open a restaurant in Helsinki. There is still time to register and impress the world with your culinary talent. If instant noodles is the height of your cooking skills, take a walk in the Helsinki central areas to taste different kinds of food and get inspired by one-day restaurant chefs. Some restaurants have set prices, and at some you just leave as much money as you feel like Anyways, remember to have some cash on you.
If this culinary weekend leaves you hungry for more, come to Kaisaniemi park on May 24-25 for the World Village Festival 2014. However, food is just one out of 150 other reasons to come to the festival.

World Village festival is a multicultural, multidimensional and multicolor festival for the whole family. Its program is vast and truly diverse: literature, poetry, theatre, music, food from all over the world, dance, circus. Check the festival program here.

Saturday, May 24
Reserve the last Saturday of May for a grandiose flea market shopping or make it getting-rid-of the-old-stuff day. On Saturday, May 24 Helsinki will turn into a big second hand market, where anyone can sell or give away their old things.
“The idea of Siivouspäivä is to make recycling easy – one man’s trash is another man’s treasure – as well as creating dynamic and responsible urban culture.”
If you have been planning to do some serious stuff editing for a while, here is your chance! Registration and reservation of a selling spot are free.
Now that you have got rid of all the old staff and feel lighter, join Women’s Fun Run 2014 on May 25.
Sunday, May 25
Naisten kymppi – Women’s 10K Fun Run 2014 is Finland’s biggest sporting event for women, with 15,000 female runners, joggers and walkers of all age. The run route goes around the beautiful scenery of Helsinki city centre.
First start: 13.00
Distance: about 10 km
Start and finish: Surrounding areas of Olympic Stadium
Unfortunately, this year registration is over, so go for a run -along instead :)
Wednesday May 28 at Hietaniemi Beach
The touring music festival Sonisphere 2014 comes to Helsinki on May 28. This year program features rock bands Metallica and Slayer with Mastodon, Ghost and Gojira.
